Exemption/ Waiver standards and regulations
Exemption /Waiver qualifications
- Please check https://flc.ncku.edu.tw/p/412-1144-21150.php?Lang=en for the waiver/exemption standards and regulations.
- Students enrolled in or before the 2024–25 academic year, including 2025-26 academic year transfer students without 4 English credits from their previous school but holding valid English proficiency certificates meeting NCKU’s exemption criteria, follow the same waiver application process and criteria as exemptions. Waived English credits count directly toward graduation.
- Students admitted in or after the 2025–2026 academic year who are granted an English course exemption must complete the exempted credits in Area Courses or Comprehensive Courses offered by the Center of General Education. For any questions regarding these General Education courses, please contact the Center of General Education or your department office.
※Note:
English Course Waiver Policy for 2025–26 Transfer Students
- With prior English course credits:
Apply through the Course Credit Waiver System (Not for Department Transfer Student) within the period announced by the Registration Division. Upload supporting documents as required.
- Without prior English credits:
If your English proficiency test meets the waiver criteria, you may apply for a English course credit waiver. See Point 4 for details.
Process, requirements, and system are the same as for exemption. Waived credits can count toward graduation.
- There are Two PHASES of applications for credit waiver/exemptions, and both must be completed. The qualifications are listed in the tables below. The credit waiver/exemptions will only be approved after the second phase of verification is done. No application is accepted later than the specified deadlines, except for special circumstances approved by the University.
[First Phase] Application ONLINE: Applications for credit waiver/exemptions shall be completed online via the Confirmation of Foreign Language Competence System (https://eagle.english.ncku.edu.tw/)
from September 1, 2025 to September 17, 2025, 9:10 AM to 5:00 PM. The waiver/exemptions qualifications for students enrolled in/after the 2017-18 academic year differ from those for students enrolled in/before the 2016-17 academic year (especially for the scores on TOEFL iBT, TOEIC, and OOPT); therefore, choose the qualifications apply to the academic year of your admission. Any untrue or insufficient applications require re-submission. Please remember to print out the application form for the current semester after the application online.
[Second Phase] Verification by Foreign Language Center: A printout of the application form along with one of the following documents should both be submitted in person to the Foreign Language Center on the second floor of Hsiu-Chi Building on Kuang-fu Campus from September 8, 2025 to September 17, 2025, 9:10 AM to 5:00 PM. Please go to the Confirmation of Foreign Language Competence System (https://eagle.english.ncku.edu.tw/) to check the results of your credit waiver/exemption application after your submission to the Foreign Language Center:
- Valid passport (for those from countries where English is an official language).
- Official transcript (or school letter) with a valid signature that describes the study period and subjects taught in English accounting for more than 50% of the entire subjects (for those who received high school education where English is the instructional language).
- Original English proficiency certificate of GEPT, TOEFL iBT, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge Main Suite, BULATS, or Oxford Online Placement Test.
Please Note:
(1) To successfully complete the English credit waiver/exemption, applicants must complete both stages of the application process and pass the review.
(2) Completing only the online registration in the first stage does not guarantee successful waiver/exemption. Applicants must print the application form and bring it to the center for the second-stage review. If the second-stage review is not completed within the deadline, applicants must reapply online next semester and submit the new-printed application form for that semester to the Foreign Language Center for review to complete the waiver/exemption process.
- Those who have waived/exempted four credits and do not intend to take any English courses must drop the enrolled courses online before the end of the third stage enrollment period. The students who do not meet the criteria for credit waiver/exemptions or fail to adhere to the deadlines should take the courses as required. Students can apply for two- and four-credit waivers/exemptions respectively only once before graduation. Maximally, only four credits can be waived/exempted.
- The system for English credit exemptions will be open every semester. Students are only required to complete the application of English credit waivers/exemptions before graduation.
