Second Foreign Language Course Selection and Addition
Second Foreign Language Course Selection/Addition for the Fall Semester of the 2026-2027 Academic Year
I. Key Course Selection Principles
- Course Load Limit: Students may take a maximum of two second foreign language courses of different languages per semester.
- Language Restriction: Students may not take two courses of the same language at different levels simultaneously.
- Class Capacity: The maximum number of students per class is 45. Instructors may make flexible adjustments based on classroom capacity and teaching preparation.
- Course Restrictions: FLC strictly prohibits those who already possess advanced level knowledge or have previously taken advanced courses from taking lower-level courses. If found unsuitable, students will be forced to withdraw.
- Repeating Courses: Credits for a course you have already passed with the exact same name will not count toward your graduation requirements. However, the grade will still be calculated in your GPA. Students are responsible for tracking their own graduation credits.
II. Course Selection & Add/Drop Process
Scenario 1: Courses with Available Slots
- Action: Select your preferences in the "NCKU Course Information & Enrollment System" to participate in the course draw.
Scenario 2: Full Courses (Requiring Add/Drop Request)
• Period: September 9, 2026, 08:30 to September 15, 2026, 13:00
- Submit an add request in the "NCKU Course Information & Enrollment System", and pay attention to any add/drop announcements from the Second Foreign Language instructors.
- Attend the class in person to request the instructor's approval based on their specific rules.
- Combine your current semester class schedule (taken after the 2nd lottery of the 3rd stage) with a screenshot of your "Course Add Checklist" with the desired course highlighted in a red box. Upload this as a single PDF file. Incomplete or incorrectly formatted documents will be rejected.
- Refer to the table below for application scenarios and fill out your reason accurately:
| Your Situation | Reasons (Choose one to fill in) |
|---|---|
| A. No second foreign language courses on your schedule | 1. For those applying for only one course: Did not draw/get into any second foreign language courses. 2. For those applying for two or more courses: Have applied for another second foreign language course: [Dept. ID]-[Serial No.] [Course Name] |
| B. The selected second foreign language course was cancelled | For those who selected a cancelled course: [Dept. ID]-[Serial No.] [Course Name] |
| C. Already have one course, but want to take a second course in a different language | For those who already have one second foreign language course: [Dept. ID]-[Serial No.] [Course Name], wish to take a second foreign language course. |

- Instructor Review Period: September 9, 2026, 08:30 to September 15, 2026, 17:00
- Check Your Status: Monitor the "Approval Status" in the "Course Add Checklist" of the "NCKU Course Information & Enrollment System". All requests will be processed by September 15, 17:00 at the latest.
IV. Important Notes for Students during Add/Drop
- What to Show the Instructor: When requesting approval in class, you must log in to the System on your phone and show the instructor your current semester schedule and your Course Add Checklist.
- Instructor Approval Conditions: Instructors will only approve your request if your schedule meets all of the following criteria:
- You are not currently enrolled in another course of the same language.
- You have fewer than two second foreign language courses in total.
- You are not enrolled in another course with the exact same name.
- Do Not Submit Multiple Requests: Do not apply for multiple sections of the same language course to increase your chances.
- Post-Add/Drop Responsibility: Once a course is successfully added, the Foreign Language Center will not assist with withdrawals, drops, or course swaps.
V. Situations Requiring Student's Attention & Responsibility
⚠️ The Foreign Language Center is not responsible for any issues arising from the following situations. Please check your status carefully:
- Exceeding Credit Limit: Exceeding your maximum credit load after adding a course without having the necessary qualifications for an overload.
- Maximum Credits Reached: Being unable to add a course because your credit load is already at the maximum.
- Course Time Conflicts: The added course has a time conflict with another course on your schedule.
- Duplicate Course from the draw: Being assigned the same course via the draw before your add/drop request is processed.
- Already Enrolled in Same Language: Already having a course in the same language on your schedule before the add/drop is processed.
- Withdrawal Period: If you need to withdraw from a course for any reason, you must do so yourself via the online system within the announced period.
VI. How Time Conflicts are Handled
- Conflict with an Existing Course:
- If your add request is approved, the original course at the conflicting time slot will be automatically dropped, and the new course will be added.
- Conflict with Another Pending Add/Drop Request:
- First-Come, First-Served: The course that is approved by an instructor first will be added to your schedule.
- Automatic Cancellation: The other pending request for the same time slot will be marked as [Time Conflict], and its status will be changed to [Application Cancelled].
VII. Relevant Regulations
- According to the "Regulations for Second Foreign Language Course Offering and Selection," students may take a maximum of two second foreign language courses per semester and may not take two courses of the same language at different levels concurrently.
- According to Article 4, Section 6 of the "NCKU Student Course Selection Regulations," credits for a repeated course (a course you have already passed with the exact same name) will not count toward your minimum graduation credits. However, the grade will be included in your semester and cumulative GPA. Students are solely responsible for any graduation credit shortages arising from this.
