Second Foreign Language Credit Exemption Application

Instructions for Second Foreign Language Course Credit Exemption Application

If you have taken a second foreign language course at NCKU or another institution and wish to apply for a credit exemption/transfer, please first confirm the "type of credit" you intend to exempt and contact the relevant offices according to the following procedures:

I. Step 1: Confirm the Type of Credit and the Corresponding Contact Office

  • To be recognized as "General Education Credits": Please contact the Center for General Education.
  • To be recognized as "Departmental Credits": Please first contact your major department office.
  • Note: If your department agrees to recognize the credits as departmental credits, the course content must subsequently be reviewed by the Foreign Language Center's instructor of the respective language to determine if it meets the exemption standards. You may refer to the "Contact Emails for Review Instructors" below, prepare all required documents, and email the instructor directly.

II. Step 2: Proceed with the Application Based on Your Student Status

  • Current Regular Students: Please follow the instructions in Step 1 and directly contact the Center for General Education or your department office. As instructed by the corresponding office, bring your "Credit Transfer Form, Instructor's Approval Email, Course Syllabus, and Transcript" to the Foreign Language Center for a stamp of approval and review.
  • Exchange Students, Returning Students, and Re-admitted Students: If you wish to transfer credits as "General Education Credits," please directly contact Ms. Yi-Ting Chen at the Center for General Education (Ext. 50212) to inquire about the regulations and submit your application.
  • Transfer Students: Please submit your application via the "Course Credit Waiver System" within the university's designated review period. The system will forward your application to the Center for General Education for review.
  • Department Transfer Students: Please submit your application via the "轉系生學分抵免系統" within the university's designated review period. The system will forward your application to the Center for General Education for review.

III. Required Documents for Review (Please Read Carefully)

Whether you are submitting your review application to the Center for General Education or directly to the instructors at our Center, you must prepare the following 2 documents to ensure a smooth process. Applications with incomplete documents will not be processed (the review process takes at least 2 to 3 working days, so please apply early):

  1. Course Syllabus from the Semester Taken, Written in the Original Language: The syllabus must detail the weekly schedule and the number of credits. The language of the syllabus must be the exact same as the language of the credits you wish to exempt. (For example: To apply for a Japanese course credit exemption, you must provide a Japanese course syllabus "written in Japanese").
  2. Course Transcript or Proof of Grades.

IV. Contact Emails for Review Instructors by Language at Our Center

If you need assistance from our Center's instructors to confirm whether a course can be recognized as a second foreign language credit at our university, please prepare the required documents mentioned above and email them to the instructor of the corresponding language.
